Swansboro middle school is taking every chance it gets to become more global and natural. We have kids in sixth and seventh grade that stand by a trash can at lunch. The trash can is for compostable items and the kids make sure that only compost products get in the trash can. Composting is a great way to help the environment and we love to do it! With the compost items we collect, we put them in our school garden to nourish the soil. Composting is a very natural, inexpensive option for our school, and it’s very easy!
When we compost we collect items like, fruit peels, food scraps, and paper. We don’t compost things like meat and dairy. Posted by Bella, Mary and Brooklyn - 7th graders

First, we researched the origin of the fruits and veggies that we are growing and made garden stakes to label them in the garden. Then we weeded the beds and planted the seeds for our salad greens. The salad greens will be used to make Salad Kits to send home with the Backpack Friends. We have learned about all different ways people can grow food with little to no resources! For example, we are growing salad greens in recycled Mountain Dew bottles and egg crates. We are also growing radishes in ziploc bags. Ms. Jackson taught us how to make homemade yogurt and use the Whey in our compost bin! Finally, we are composting left over food from student lunches to help feed our garden. Composting is great way to recycle waste and make it into something edible and nutritious! We have made public service announcements to share with the students and teachers on our campus to help educate them on our project and our mission to help end world hunger!
According to Hunger-research.sog.nc.edu, about 24% of children in Onslow County live in Food Insecure homes. That means they may not know where their next meal might be coming from. Over 25,000 people in Onslow County are food insecure. Our project will help provide fresh foods like strawberries, homemade yogurt, squash, peppers, radishes, salad kits and much more to children in our school community!
